Speaking in Tongues

I was drunk
in the velvet black night
I felt you tuck me into bed
Then I spun with the splintering sky
as you struck out the floodlight
then you were leaving; I tried to call your name
But I was spinning and drowning and floating in space
I was speaking in tongues
I was running around with a rose
in my mouth
I recall
your lips brush my face
as we danced over the crested wave
you caught my wrist called me Gypsy Lee
at the party, at the party, at the party
then you were leaving; I tried to call your name
But I was spinning and drowning and reeling in space
I was speaking in tongues
I was running around with a rose in my mouth
I was drunk
The wineglass shattered like my picture of us
I tugged at the shard with shaking hands
"What does it matter?" I convinced myself
a dazzling crimson drop trickled down
fell down drunk
The rose fell rushing toward the ground
it's petals spread, crushed as we whirled around
the root bound my foot in a crooked embrace
I lost my shoe
I lost my faith
then you were leaving; I tried to call your name
But I was spinning and drowning and feeling ashamed
I was speaking in tongues
I was running around with a rose in my mouth
It was crushed
in your love
I was drunk
